PREPAID SMART METER FOR ALL USERS

 

The goal is to make the entire meter prepaid smart by 2025

 

Trivandrum: 17 Nov 2021- The Electricity Board has prepared a plan to install prepaid smart meters in 4 phases for all users in the State. For 1.3 crore customers, the meter installation project will cost around Rs 9,216 crore. In the first phase, prepaid smart meters will be installed for high-tension and extra-high tension users, government agencies up to the block level, and other customers using more than 200 units per month. The first phase is expected to cost Rs 1,123 crore per meter alone. In the second phase, `1264 crore is required to install meters for low tension users in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Kozhikode. In the next step, the Low Tension is for the users in other cities. It is expected to cost Rs 1264 crore. The remaining users will be placed in the final stage. 4493 crore is required for this phase. A prepaid smart meter costs around Rs 6000-7000. Of this, Rs 900 is central assistance. 1,170 crore would be available in this category. This is part of a plan to install smart meters for Rs 3,05,984 crore over 5 years. The grant of this is Rs 97,631 crore. 150,000 crore is the price of a prepaid smart meter alone. The project, which will strengthen the power grid, will include the installation of smart meters in transformers and main supply lines. The goal is to make the entire user's meter prepaid smart by March 2025.
